Couples often dread the idea of counseling, calling a couples counselor is most often a last resort. Many partners express fear that a counselor will judge or lecture them (as we often see on tv), or even worse, side with their partner. My first priority is to maintain a balanced approach and to show couples that I do not make judgments on who is right or wrong. This creates an environment of safety where couples can tolerate the vulnerability required to examine their own behavior and work on new patterns.
My belief is that partners seek couples counseling because they are stuck in a negative communication cycle. Cycles I commonly work with involve criticism, blame, and distancing. Couples often express that they're having the same argument again and again but can't seem to get unstuck. For some couples, the negative cycle drives most interactions and conflict is high. Other couples find that they can mostly avoid conflict by steering clear of danger zones yet this avoidance can leave them feeling more like cordial roommates than partners.
My couples counseling approach prompts new communication patterns that encourage openness and understanding. The counseling environment enables couples to share their needs and their experiences of their struggles with a safe structure. As couples feel safer, more effective and satisfying ways of relating can be practiced in therapy and then used at home.
